Imlil, Morocco: Things to Do, Best Treks & Travel Guide

Imlil is a Berber mountain village in the High Atlas, about 65 km and 1.5 to 2 hours from Marrakech, at roughly 1,740 meters. It is the main starting point for climbing Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa, and it is also a base for day hikes, village treks and multi-day routes through the Atlas Mountains. You can visit it as a day trip from Marrakech or stay for several days of trekking.

At Toubkal Outdoor, we are based in Imlil. We guide travelers through these valleys and villages every season, so this guide comes from local experience, covering what to do, where to walk and how to plan your visit.

What Is Imlil?

Imlil sits in a valley within Toubkal National Park, surrounded by walnut trees, terraced fields and steep mountain slopes. It is small, and most of its life revolves around the surrounding Berber villages and the trekkers who pass through.

For visitors, Imlil matters for a simple reason: nearly every route to Mount Toubkal (4,167 m) starts here. But it is much more than a trailhead. The valley offers easy walks, cultural stops and gateways to some of the best trekking in Morocco.
